A question you all need to respond to!

Is it wrong to accept a job that is not in your major?

What if you have the option of taking a job in your major or taking a job that isn't. They are both something you are very interested in but one is what your degree was in and the other isn't really. I would be happy with either job because pay is good and the benefits are great but one has music and the other doesn't. Music would still be a part of my life but I wouldn't be teaching it. I haven't been offered either of the jobs I am talking about but I feel confident that I am a strong applicant for both so it is a very serious quesiton.

What do you think?

I majored in Electrical Engineering and Technical Writing. I'm not a Technology Director (computer guy). College teaches you a lot more than what you get in the classes, and especially more than what you get in your "major."

My advice? Do something you'd volunteer to do if you could afford it. DON'T take a job because it pays well, take it because you'll love it. (This is more true if we're talking about career jobs, and not "fill in the gaps" jobs -- shovel manure if you have to for those times...)

That's probably not very helpful, but true nonetheless.

I think as long as you enjoy both positions-- go for it. I dont think you should limit yourself to what your degree is in. God gives us many MANY talents-- and music is only one of yours. If you think the Lord is blessing you with this opportunity-- run with it! :) And-- should you decide it isn't the perfect fit after a while-- you always have the chance to change down the road! Good luck! :)

i agree that you need to do what you will be happiest in, whether it follows your major or not!

i agree with the previous comments. i am realizing i may not be getting my first "real" job after i graduated in the exact area i want. but who knows? and i guess our plans are not always God's plans. i think it is important for us to be flexible. that is a good point that just because you get a job in a different area than you originally thought you'd see yourself doesn't mean that is where you will always be

Personally, I think you have a passion for music and would feel like you "settled" if you took a different kind of job. That said, Do what makes you happy in your work, not just cause it was your major. It was your major 'cause you had opportunity, talent, yearning for more of it, and could affect the lives of others while excelling. That would be great for a work environment if it "fit". We are not all that fortunate. Ask yourself why do you want the job(s) and where will it lead you?
